Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P and one-half of the former P-Square group, has reacted to calls from some fans asking him to retire from music.
The 44-year-old singer said age should not determine when an artist leaves the entertainment industry, insisting that there is no fixed retirement age in music.
His comments followed recent reactions from some fans who argued that he should stop making Afrobeats because of his age.
Mr P says music career has no deadline
Speaking during an interview with The Beat FM Lagos, Mr P said musicians should be allowed to continue their careers as long as they remain passionate about their craft.
He referenced late global music icon Michael Jackson, noting that the singer continued performing and working on music projects during his later years.
According to Mr P, retirement in music is a personal decision and should not be forced by public opinion.
Singer criticises pressure on older artistes
The singer also expressed concern over what he described as attempts to discourage successful musicians from continuing their careers.
He argued that some people focus more on bringing artists down rather than supporting their creativity and achievements.
Mr P added that similar criticism has been directed at other Nigerian artistes, including Wizkid.

Despite the discussions surrounding his age and career, Mr P remains active in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
The singer, who gained fame as part of P-Square alongside his twin brother Paul Okoye, has continued releasing music and performing for fans.
