Kano NHRC records 176 rights violation complaints in May

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Kano recorded 176 complaints of alleged human rights violations in May, amid rising public complaints in the state.

According to the commission, a significant number of the complaints were linked to the rights of children, women and other gender-related concerns, reflecting the continued vulnerability of these groups and the need for stronger protection mechanisms.

The figures were disclosed on Wednesday in Kano by the state coordinator of the commission, Shehu Abdullahi, during a media briefing on the agency’s activities.

Abdullahi revealed that the commission received a total of 179 complaints of alleged human rights abuses across April and May, adding that 139 of the cases had been treated, while 40 were still pending.

He explained that many of the reported cases involved family-related disputes, including abandonment of family responsibilities and incidents of domestic violence, noting that such issues continue to pose serious challenges to households and communities.

The state coordinator further disclosed that several of the complaints were related to economic, cultural and labour rights, as well as cases of physical violence, underscoring the wide range of human rights concerns affecting residents seeking intervention and redress.

According to him, the commission has made significant progress in addressing many of the complaints brought before it, while efforts are ongoing to resolve the outstanding cases.

“We have made considerable progress in treating the complaints brought before the commission, while efforts are ongoing to resolve the remaining cases,” Abdullahi said.

He also explained that the commission had intervened in several marital disputes through mediation, helping couples to resolve their differences and restore understanding in their relationships.

Abdullahi urged married couples to exercise patience and understanding in managing family responsibilities, stressing that dialogue remains an essential tool for addressing domestic challenges and promoting peaceful coexistence.
