The Kano State Fire Service recorded 58 fire incidents and 13 deaths in May 2026, highlighting the continued challenges posed by fire outbreaks and other emergencies across the state.
The agency also handled a total statistics of about 80 emergency calls comprising fire outbreaks, rescue missions and false alarms in the month 58 of which were related to fire incidents, 15 involved rescue operations, while seven turned out to be false alarms.
The figures were disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi.
Providing an overview of the service’s activities, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, said that firefighters remained actively engaged in responding to emergencies and protecting lives and property.
Anas also uttered that the 13 deaths resulted from a combination of fire outbreaks, road traffic accidents and incidents involving ponds and wells, noting that rescue teams were able to save 34 lives through swift interventions.
The service further reported significant property losses caused by fire incidents. Estimates showed that assets valued at more than N144 million were destroyed during the period.
Despite the losses, firefighters succeeded in preventing greater damage by salvaging properties worth about N437 million through timely response efforts and effective firefighting operations.
Anas urged residents to adopt stricter fire safety measures and exercise caution when handling activities that could trigger fire outbreaks, adding that the mishaps can be prevented through vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines.
He also reassured residents that the service would continue to strengthen emergency response efforts, public sensitisation campaigns and preventive strategies aimed at protecting lives and property across Kano State.
