Iran winger Mohammad Mohebi has responded to questions surrounding his goal celebration after being accused by some fans of making a gun gesture during his side’s 2-2 draw against New Zealand at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The FC Rostov forward scored Iran’s second goal of the match shortly after the hour mark, heading home in an entertaining Group-stage encounter.
Following the goal, Mohebi celebrated by raising his right hand and making a gesture that sparked debate on social media, with some viewers interpreting it as an imitation of firing a gun.
Mohebi addresses celebration controversy
The celebration quickly attracted attention online, particularly given the heightened political tensions involving Iran in recent months.
However, speaking after the match, Mohebi dismissed suggestions that there was any political message behind the gesture and said it was simply directed at Iranian supporters in attendance.
“I wanted to say thank you to all Iranians who live in Los Angeles, they make a great atmosphere,” Mohebi said.
“The celebration came to mind, and I do this for all of the fans, just a celebration, you know.”
The winger also made a heart-shaped gesture during the celebration as he acknowledged supporters following his goal.
Political tensions overshadow Iran opener
Iran’s World Cup campaign has unfolded against the backdrop of political tensions, with some fans booing the country’s national anthem before kickoff at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, teammate Ramin Rezaeian, who scored Iran’s opening goal in the draw, also drew attention with his own celebration.
After covering his face with his shirt, Rezaeian was asked about the gesture but declined to elaborate.
“It’s something political, I don’t want to talk about that,” he said.
“We are here to answer football questions. If there is a problem between us (the Iranian people), it is between us.”
The draw earned Iran a point from their opening World Cup match as they continue preparations for their remaining group-stage fixtures.
Despite the off-field discussions surrounding the team, Iran’s focus remains on advancing to the knockout rounds after securing a valuable result against New Zealand.
