The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.

Mustapha Kwankwaso, who previously served as Commissioner for Youths and Sports in Kano State, was unveiled during a party caucus meeting held at the Kwankwaso family residence in Kano.

The announcement was confirmed by Habibu Saleh Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya political movement, in a brief statement issued on Monday.

According to Mohammed, the decision to pick Mustapha Kwankwaso followed a recommendation by the party leadership, which the governorship candidate accepted.

He stated that the party considered the younger Kwankwaso’s experience in public service as well as his background as a businessman before recommending him for the position.

Unveiling Held at Kwankwaso Family Residence

The running mate was officially unveiled at an NDC caucus meeting held at Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s Miller residence in Kano.

Party officials described the selection process as a consensus-driven decision aimed at strengthening the party’s chances ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking after his unveiling, Mustapha Kwankwaso accepted the nomination and expressed appreciation to the party leadership and the governorship candidate for their confidence in him.

He pledged to contribute meaningfully to the party’s success in the upcoming election and to support its political agenda in Kano State.

The development adds a notable dimension to Kano’s political landscape, as Mustapha Kwankwaso’s father, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is also politically active at the national level.

Reports indicate that the younger Kwankwaso previously resigned from the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after political differences emerged between the governor and his father.

Observers say the latest nomination further highlights the continued influence of the Kwankwaso political family within the state’s political structure.
