The Federal Government has recorded about 150 convictions within two days in the latest phase of mass terrorism trials, in what officials describe as a major push to fast-track the prosecution of terrorism-related cases across the country.
According to the government, the proceedings are being conducted simultaneously before 10 Federal High Court judges sitting in Abuja as part of efforts to clear a large backlog of terrorism cases.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the Federal High Court on Tuesday, noting that the current phase of trials, which began on Monday, had already recorded about 160 cases on the first day, resulting in roughly 150 convictions.
“Yesterday, we had about 160 trials. I think about 150 convictions,” Fagbemi stated.
He added that the second day of proceedings recorded an even heavier caseload, with about 300 cases brought before the courts, while around 84 additional matters were expected to be concluded before the close of sitting.
Fagbemi explained that the multi-court arrangement was introduced to improve efficiency and reduce delays in the justice system, adding that the exercise would continue in the coming days as more cases are concluded.
“Whatever we can do, or wherever we stop today, we’ll continue tomorrow and also on Thursday. So it’s still ongoing,” he said.
The AGF also urged members of the public to be patient, stressing that the ongoing trials reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening justice delivery, ensuring accountability, and upholding the rule of law in the prosecution of terrorism-related offences.
