The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, public holiday, to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration, reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance and the values that underpin the nation’s constitutional order.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who said the observance is in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose struggles paved the way for democratic rule in the country.
The minister noted that the current administration remains committed to upholding the principles of the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance as essential pillars of a thriving democracy.
He also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to strengthen internal security measures to protect lives and property across the country.
According to him, maintaining a safe and secure environment is critical to democratic stability and national development.
Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the occasion for reflection and to renew their commitment to lawful conduct, responsible citizenship and national unity.
He further called on citizens to continue supporting democratic institutions and promoting the values that foster peace, stability and good governance.
