Facebook has suffered a major global outage that disrupted access to its platform and Messenger service, leaving millions of users unable to log in or communicate across multiple regions.
The disruption left millions unable to access, post, or communicate on one of the world’s most widely used social networks, with users reporting sudden logouts and login failures across multiple regions.
“An unexpected error occurred,” was the message displayed to users who were automatically logged out and unable to regain access.
The main Facebook website also showed a similar notice stating, “Something went wrong. We’re working on it and will get it fixed as soon as possible.”
The outage began around 6:45 a.m. Pacific Time (2:45 p.m. UK time) on Friday, according to outage tracking platform Downdetector, which also experienced brief disruptions due to the surge in reports.
The incident primarily affected Facebook and Messenger, while Instagram and WhatsApp remained largely functional, although Instagram’s web version reportedly experienced intermittent glitches.
Frustrated users took to other platforms to share screenshots of error messages and report the sudden disruption, amplifying confusion across the digital space.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has yet to issue a detailed explanation, and its official status page showed no immediate update at the time of filing this report.
The outage has sparked concerns over the reliability of global digital infrastructure, highlighting how dependent users have become on Meta’s ecosystem for communication and daily activity.
