The Edo state government has reaffirmed that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo remains committed to updating and implementing the state’s Tourism Master Plan as part of efforts to unlock the sector’s economic potential.
Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Ikhilor, gave the assurance Monday at the 2026 Summit, Exhibition and Fashion Show organised by the Edo State Tourism Agency in Benin City.
He stated that while concerns remain over the ownership and development of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), such issues would not derail the government’s determination to advance tourism development in the state.
Ikhilor disclosed that a presidential committee currently reviewing matters relating to the controversial museum project would soon submit its report, expressing confidence that its recommendations would provide a lasting resolution to the dispute.
The SSG noted, “the tourism master plan already developed for the Edo State remains a valuable document capable of driving growth in the sector if effectively implemented.
”I have gone through the master plan and I must commend the effort that went into its preparation. It is a comprehensive document and I encourage the Director-General of the Tourism Agency to not only implement it but also improve on it where necessary.”
Also, the Director-General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), Dr Ola Awakan, assured of the Federal Government’s commitment to partnering with the State government to unlock and develop its vast tourism potential.
Awakan said Edo’s abundant tourism resources could only be fully harnessed through strategic collaboration among government, the private sector, and other critical stakeholders.
“The tourism potential in Edo can not be harnessed in isolation. Strong synergy is required, particularly with the private sector. We must work together to unlock the immense opportunities within the sector,” he said.
In her address, Director-General of the Edo State Tourism Agency, Lady Vivian Elabor, urged investors and development partners to take advantage of the opportunities available in Edo state, assuring them that the agency remains committed to creating an enabling environment for investment in the tourism sector.
