Defence Minister Hails Navy’s Role in Maritime Security, Blue Economy Growth, Reaffirms FG’s Support
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Navy through enhanced funding, modern technology, and strategic support to enable it effectively safeguard the nation’s maritime interests and drive economic growth.
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night in Lagos on Friday, General Musa said the government remains committed to providing the Service with the resources, capabilities and enabling environment needed to build a modern, technology-driven naval force.
The event marked the grand finale of a week-long celebration commemorating seven decades of the Navy’s service to Nigeria.
According to the minister, the future of maritime security depends on the Navy’s ability to leverage innovation and emerging technologies to counter evolving threats in the maritime domain.
He said advanced surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned technologies, cyber defence tools and data-driven operations would play a critical role in enhancing operational effectiveness and securing Nigeria’s maritime environment.
“The future of the Nigerian Navy lies in its ability to harness cutting-edge technology and strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners. A modern, technology-driven Navy will enhance maritime domain awareness, improve operational effectiveness, and contribute significantly to collective security in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond,” he said.
General Musa commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings and civilian personnel for their professionalism, discipline and resilience over the past 70 years, describing the Navy as a model of organisational excellence.
He also expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s international partners for their continued support towards promoting maritime security and stability in the region.
The Defence Minister noted that the Navy’s operations have contributed significantly to the growth of Nigeria’s blue economy through the protection of sea lanes, offshore oil and gas installations and other critical maritime assets.
He said the Service has remained at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing and other maritime crimes that threaten national economic interests.
“Through active participation in internal security operations and support to sister services and security agencies, the Navy has played a vital role in maintaining peace and stability, thereby creating the secure environment necessary for economic growth and national development,” he stated.
The minister also congratulated officers and ratings honoured during the awards ceremony, including personnel recognised posthumously, for their dedication, professionalism and sacrifices in service to the nation.
“Their selfless service upholds the highest traditions of the Nigerian Navy and inspires future generations. Tonight, we celebrate not only individual accomplishments but also the collective spirit of excellence that continues to propel the Service forward,” he added.
Speaking on the significance of the Ceremonial Sunset, General Musa described it as one of the most enduring naval traditions globally, symbolising duty, honour and the seamless transfer of responsibility from one watch to another.
He said the tradition serves as a reminder that while individual duties may come to an end, the Navy’s vigilance in protecting the nation’s maritime domain remains constant.
As the Nigerian Navy celebrates its 70th anniversary, the Ministry of Defence joined Nigerians in commemorating the milestone and commended officers, ratings and civilian staff for their unwavering commitment to the security, unity and prosperity of the country.
