Suspected bandits have attacked a secondary school in Borno State, abducting some students who were writing the Senior School Certificate Examination organised by the National Examinations Council, NECO.
The incident occurred at Government Day Secondary School in Lassa town, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of the state.
A teacher was killed during the attack, while another staff member was injured.
Attack causes panic in Lassa community
Residents said the attackers stormed the area on Monday morning while examination activities were ongoing.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen arrived in large numbers, shooting into the air and creating fear among residents before taking away some students and teachers.
One resident claimed that troops stationed in the area had moved to a nearby location shortly before the attack.
“The soldiers were not around when the terrorists invaded,” the resident said, adding that the attackers operated without resistance.
Police confirm incident
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the attack and acknowledged that some students were still missing after the incident.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso said security agencies were aware of the situation.
Authorities are expected to continue efforts to establish the number of abducted students and ensure their safe recovery.
