The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has unveiled former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 general election.
The ADC disclosed that after its primary election, it held consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, as well as representatives from across the country’s geopolitical zones after which they reached the decision to appoint Amaechi as the running-mate to Atiku and also secured significant support from party members nationwide.
The political party made the announcement in a statement issued on Monday by the party’s national spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, describing the duo as a combination of two experienced political figures with the capacity to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges and drive national development as preparations intensify for the next electoral cycle.
ADC highlighted Amaechi’s extensive political career, noting that he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly before completing two terms as governor of the oil-rich state.
The party also pointed to his tenure as Minister of Transportation, during which he supervised major rail and transportation projects across the country, adding that his experience in both the legislative and executive arms of government would strengthen a future ADC administration and provide valuable support in governance from the onset.
Furthermore, ADC said the former minister’s political influence in the South-South region and other parts of Southern Nigeria, coupled with his reputation as an administrator and coalition builder, made him a strategic choice for the vice-presidential position.
The opposition party maintained that the ticket would focus on tackling economic challenges, improving security, creating jobs and promoting national unity if elected into office.
ADC expressed confidence that the pairing would strengthen its coalition and inspire greater public support ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
