THE Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as “Okada”, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, as part of efforts to enhance security and improve urban transportation.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Umuahia on Saturday.
Kanu said that the prohibition was approved by Governor Alex Chioma Otti and took effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.
According to him, the policy is aimed at strengthening security, enhancing public safety, improving traffic management and promoting a more organised transportation system across the affected urban centres.
He directed all commercial motorcycle operators to cease operations within the designated metropolitan areas on or before the effective date.
“The government has mandated security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities to ensure strict compliance with this directive.
“Any individual or operator found violating the order will be arrested, while the motorcycle involved will be confiscated in accordance with the law,” he said.
The commissioner urged residents, transport operators, community leaders and other stakeholders to cooperate with authorities to ensure the successful implementation of the directive.
He noted that the measure was designed to advance the collective safety, orderliness and development of the state.
Kanu advised all affected persons to take immediate note of the directive and comply accordingly.
The Abia State Government reiterated its commitment to policies aimed at improving security, public safety and the quality of life of residents across the state.
