The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Benin Zone has warned of a comprehensive and indefinite strike across seven state-owned universities in Edo, Ondo and Delta states over alleged failure of the respective governments to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement.
The affected institutions are Ambrose Alli University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Delta State University, University of Delta, Dennis Osadebay University and Southern Delta University.
Addressing journalists at the University of Benin on Monday, the zonal coordinator of ASUU Benin Zone, Prof. Monday Lewis Igbafen, expressed concern that none of the state universities in the zone had implemented the agreement six months after its unveiling by the federal government.
According to him, the agreement, unveiled on January 14, 2026, was intended to bring an end to years of negotiations and ensure industrial harmony in public universities, with State governments directed through the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission to comply fully.
Igbafen noted that “while Federal Universities and at least ten State Universities across the country had implemented the agreement and paid arrears, lecturers in State Universities within the Benin Zone are yet to benefit.
“The patience of our congresses in these State Universities has been exhausted. For six months, our members have waited for concrete action but have been met with disregard and trivialisation.”
The zonal coordinator accused the governments of Edo, Ondo and Delta states of failing to provide the financial support required for implementation, describing the situation as unjust and provocative.
The union demanded that the next salary payment to its members should reflect the Consequential Adjustment and other allowances contained in the agreement, while all arrears accruing from January 2026 must be paid without further delay.
