Lagos LG boss seeks more PSPs for efficient waste management

THE Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr Babatunde Hunpe, has appealed to the Lagos State Government to increase the number of Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators serving the area to enhance waste management.
Hunpe made the appeal on Saturday during a sanitation tour of communities in the council area, including Badagry Roundabout, Jegba Quarters, Posukoh Quarters and Wharakoh Quarters.
He said the current number of PSP operators was inadequate to meet the waste collection needs of the growing population.
The chairman advised residents against burning waste, urging them to bag and hand over their refuse to PSP operators for proper disposal.
“The best way to dispose of your waste is not to burn it. People should bag their waste and hand it over to PSP operators responsible for waste collection.
“We will continue to deploy resources to address environmental concerns and clear waste from areas affected by indiscriminate dumping,” he said.
Hunpe said environmental health officers and officials of the Kick Against Indiscipline corps had been mobilised to sustain compliance and prevent environmental violations during and after the exercise.
“The council will continue to respond to environmental violations wherever they are identified, and I encourage residents to support efforts aimed at maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment,” he said.
The chairman expressed satisfaction with residents’ participation in the sanitation exercise, noting that many had cleaned their surroundings before the arrival of the council’s environmental team.
According to him, council officials evacuated waste from identified locations using council-provided waste tricycles, while environmental officers monitored compliance across the communities.
He urged residents to sustain proper waste disposal practices and maintain clean surroundings.
Hunpe also noted that awareness of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, now in its second month, was gradually increasing across the community.
At Jegba Quarters, the chairman presented cash gifts to some residents in recognition of their commitment to environmental cleanliness before the sanitation team arrived. (NAN)
