Tinubu Sacks NMDPRA Boss, Nominates Replacement
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the removal of Saidu Mohammed as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), citing public interest.
In a move aimed at repositioning the country’s petroleum regulatory framework, the President has nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as the new head of the Authority. The appointment is, however, subject to confirmation by the Senate.
According to a State House statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the decision is in line with provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen regulatory effectiveness in the midstream and downstream segments of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
The statement noted that Umar brings over 25 years of experience spanning energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure, with expertise in strategic leadership, operational transformation, and large-scale project execution. He holds a degree in Accounting from Bayero University Kano and has attended executive programmes at Harvard Business School.
Pending Senate confirmation, the most senior official within the NMDPRA will oversee the agency’s operations in an acting capacity.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing chief executive for his service, wishing him success in his future endeavours.
The presidency reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring competent leadership across key regulatory institutions to drive energy security, sectoral reforms, and sustainable economic growth.
