The extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for an attack in Adamawa state that left at least 29 people dead.
The claim of responsibility was reportedly made via a statement circulated on Telegram, but authorities are yet to officially confirm ISIS involvement in the attack.
The attack occurred in Guyaku and Telabala communities in Gombi local government area during a football match attended by residents.
Reports indicate that the assailants struck in the early evening, opening fire on spectators and players.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen arrived around 5pm, shooting sporadically and causing panic among those gathered.
A resident, Musa Guyaku, said the attackers invaded during the match and set property ablaze.
“Yesterday evening, youths organised a football match between two communities… Suddenly, gunmen invaded our community and were shooting sporadically, killing two persons sitting in a hut and burning down the hut,” he said.
The attackers reportedly destroyed houses and a religious building, leaving parts of the communities in ruins. Survivors fled the area as families mourned those killed.
Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa state, visited the affected communities and described the incident as distressing.
“We will continue to do our best because they are our people, and we will stand by them and ensure that government collaborates with the military and other security agencies to ensure that they are well protected,” he said.
