The College of Lagos (UNILAG) has formally restored college students’ union actions after years of suspension.
A brand new set of pupil leaders have been inaugurated in a ceremony that alerts a recent section in pupil unionism within the establishment.
The vice-chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, presided over the swearing-in of the College students’ Union executives, corridor chairpersons, and representatives of the Institute of Persevering with Training (ICE) throughout an occasion held Tuesday on the Tayo Aderinokun Corridor, Akoka campus.
Describing the ceremony as a significant step towards the complete return of union buildings, the Dean of College students’ Affairs, Johnson Agunsoye, said that the inauguration marks the start of a phased course of that can result in the formation of an entire College students’ Union Government Council and College students’ Parliament within the 2026/2027 educational session.
As a part of the college’s assist for the newly inaugurated management, the vice-chancellor accepted a ₦5 million take-off grant, momentary workplace lodging, and the refurbishment of an 18-seater bus to help union actions.
In her remarks, Prof. Ogunsola congratulated the brand new executives for his or her perseverance in restoring unionism, which had been suspended since 2016 following violent protests that disrupted educational actions and led to break of college property. She urged the coed leaders to see their positions as a chance to serve responsibly and promote dialogue, self-discipline, and constructive engagement.
