23 pupils abducted as bandits attack orphanage in Kogi

Some suspected bandits have kidnapped a total of 23 pupils from the Dahallukitab Group of Schools in Zariagi, Kogi State.

The wife of the proprietor of the school was also kidnapped by the bandits who attacked the institution located in the settlement near Kabba Junction along the Lokoja–Okene road in Adavi Local Government Area of the state.

Sources within the settlement said the incident took place on Sunday night when the bandits invaded the premises which also serves as an orphanage.

According to residents, the bandits upon storming the school fired several shots before whisking the children and the other victims away.

“It was shocking. We started hearing gunshots from that area late at night.

“This morning, we heard that the gunmen attacked the orphanage and school, abducting pupils, the proprietor’s wife, and some staff,” a resident said.

Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo described the attack as unfortunate.

While also noting the attack was avoidable, Fanwo said 15 of the abducted pupils had been rescued.

“The incident occurred late on April 26, 2026, when unknown gunmen invaded the premises and abducted 23 pupils alongside the wife of the proprietor,” Fanwo said.

Stating that security operatives led by the Nigeria Police responded promptly to an emergency call regarding the incident.

He also assured that efforts are made to ensure the immediate and safe rescue of the remaining captives.

In addition, Fanwo expressed concern over the increasing number of unregistered schools and orphanages in the state.

“Operating orphanages and schools in remote areas without proper registration and notification to authorities poses serious risks, especially in the current security climate.“Such practices not only undermine safety standards but also expose innocent children to avoidable dangers,” he noted.
