The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has reaffirmed its support for Cristiano Ronaldo’s continued involvement with the national team, with federation president Pedro Proença describing the veteran forward as a major symbol of Portuguese football.
In comments published through the federation’s X account, Proença said Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s plans whenever he is fit and available for selection.
Proença strongly defended Ronaldo’s place in the squad, pointing to the forward’s long service to the national team and his sporting contribution.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in history,” Proença said, while highlighting the forward’s more than two decades of service to Portuguese football.
He added that Ronaldo’s continued selection is justified by his performances and ability, saying the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would remain part of the group whenever he is physically ready.
The federation president also addressed the recent tension between Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus, describing the situation as a misunderstanding that should be resolved internally.
The comments come after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp following the controversy surrounding his involvement in the team during the recent international fixtures. Ronaldo had been left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway and subsequently departed the camp.
Jesus later said Ronaldo could return to the national team if he wanted to, leaving the decision about his international future largely in the player’s hands.
Proença said Ronaldo remains closely connected to Portugal and pointed to his role as captain earlier in the recent run of matches.
According to the federation president, Ronaldo’s decision to continue representing Portugal instead of ending his international career after the 2026 World Cup reflects his attachment to the national team.
Proença further stressed that the relationship between Ronaldo, the Portuguese public and the national side remains strong.

With the latest four-match international schedule now completed, the FPF president said there is an opportunity for Ronaldo, Jesus and the federation to address the disagreement calmly.
He maintained that Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s football legacy and can continue with the national team whenever the coach wants him.
The latest comments from Proença, together with Jesus’ recent statement that Ronaldo can return if he chooses, indicate that the door remains open for the veteran forward to continue his international career.
