Plateau Gov frees 130 inmates on independence day

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh, has granted an outright pardon to 130 inmates as part of activities to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration in the state in the state.

Manasseh granted the prerogative mercy to the freed individuals stating that the initiative is in line with his theory on giving every citizen a sense of belonging and an opportunity to fulfil their aspirations.

The Governor announced the measure on Thursday disclosing that four of the inmates, Zuhumnan Musa, Jeremiah Aese, Pam Lang and Thoma Danboyi, who were on death sentences have been acquitted from their prison terms.

In a statement by the government, others who include Kamshine Gomerep, Maju Sajen, Jan Thomas, Gody Victor, Imran Maikasuwa, Biplang Emmanuel, Peace Sunday, Salisu Usman, Geoffrey John, Shwarpo Luka, among others, were also freed after being jailed for life.

In the spirit of celebration of the country’s 66th anniversary, the executive head described the occasion as a huge moment to reflect on the nation’s journey since independence, honour the sacrifices of past leaders and contribute to a stronger, united and prosperous Nigeria.

“Nigeria’s strength lies in the collective determination of its citizens to rise above differences and build a nation in which every citizen has a sense of belonging and an opportunity to fulfil his or her aspirations,” he said.

“The responsibility of nation-building has passed from one generation to another and that every citizen has a role to play in building a peaceful, stable and prosperous country,” he added.

While lauding the efforts of President Bola Tinubu in sustaining the unity and stability of the country and in advancing the Nigerian project, Manasseh reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a Plateau State where citizens can pursue their aspirations in an atmosphere of peace, security, justice and inclusive development.

He commended the residents of the area for their resilience, patience, patriotism and invaluable contributions to the development of the state and the nation, and urged them to keep faith in the Nigerian project despite the challenges confronting the nation.
