“Ned Nwoko’s ‘Mosquito Trial’ ends in defeat, we won” — Sowore

Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has celebrated the dismissal of a criminal case instituted against him following a complaint by Senator Ned Nwoko.

Sowore disclosed this in a statement, saying the Federal High Court brought the four-year-old case to an end after Justice Emeka Nwite struck it out.

How the case started

According to Sowore, the case began in 2022 when he was arrested by the Nigeria Police following a cybercrime complaint allegedly filed by Nwoko.

He said he was accused of cyberbullying the senator after Sahara Reporters published a report concerning Nwoko’s foundation and its widely publicised campaign to eradicate mosquitoes in Africa.

Sowore said the allegations also included claims that he had suggested donors were being scammed through the mosquito-eradication project.

Sowore’s question about mosquito eradication

Explaining what led to the legal battle, Sowore said he had raised questions about the feasibility of Nwoko’s mosquito-eradication campaign.

He said he had asked how Nwoko intended to eradicate mosquitoes across Africa when they could not be eradicated around his residence in Abuja.

According to Sowore, the question eventually landed him in court and kept him involved in legal proceedings for four years.

‘The mosquito has finally been swatted’

Reacting to the court’s decision, Sowore described the outcome as a victory, saying attempts to intimidate him had failed.

He accused his opponents of trying to turn journalism, criticism and legitimate questions into a criminal case.

Sowore said, “For four long years, I stood my ground. Today, the case has ended and we won.

“They tried to turn journalism, criticism and legitimate questions into a criminal case. They tried to intimidate me, but they failed.

“Four years later, the mosquito has finally been swatted.

“Truth may be delayed, but it cannot be permanently buried.

“We won.”

Sowore’s reaction

Sowore referred to the case as Ned Nwoko’s “Mosquito Trial” and said it had ended “ingloriously” after four years of legal proceedings.

His statement followed the Federal High Court’s decision to strike out the case, bringing the prolonged legal dispute to an end.
