Messi bows out with goal, 2 assists as Argentina beat Benin 3-0

Lionel Messi brought his 21-year international career to an emotional close on Tuesday night, scoring a goal and providing two assists as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 in a farewell friendly at the Monumental Stadium.

More than 85,000 supporters gathered in Buenos Aires to witness Messi’s final appearance for the national team, turning the match into a celebration of one of Argentina’s most decorated footballers.

After a goalless first half, Messi helped Argentina break the deadlock in the 48th minute when his corner was converted by veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi.

The Argentina captain then set up Nico Paz for the second goal in the 61st minute before completing the scoring himself 10 minutes later, converting a penalty for his 126th international goal.

The performance meant Messi was directly involved in all three of Argentina’s goals in his final international match.

The 39-year-old finished his Argentina career with a record 208 appearances and 126 goals, making him both the country’s most-capped player and its leading scorer.

The occasion was marked by tributes before, during and after the match. The game was briefly stopped in the 10th minute, reflecting Messi’s famous No. 10 shirt, as supporters gave him a standing ovation.

At the final whistle, teammates, members of the opposing team and officials gathered around Messi before a drone display and further celebrations brought the farewell to a close.

Messi became emotional while addressing the crowd after the match, reflecting on his long association with Argentina and the significance of wearing the national team’s shirt for more than two decades.

His international career included Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 Finalissima. Argentina also reached the 2014 and 2026 World Cup finals during his international career.

Messi’s departure from international football does not necessarily mark the end of his playing career. He remains under contract with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, where he continues to play at club level.

For Argentina, the 3-0 victory provided a fitting conclusion to Messi’s time with the national team. For the player himself, it was a final night in the famous blue and white shirt that ended with a goal, two assists and an emotional farewell from the supporters who watched his international journey for more than 20 years.
