The Federal Government has recorded ₦1.6 trillion in investment across 31 gas infrastructure projects, covering 205 infrastructure assets under the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF).
The investment, which has supported the development of gas infrastructure, is aimed at expanding domestic gas utilisation, with nine Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations already operational in Lagos, Abuja, Owerri and Ile-Ife.
According to an infographic shared via social media on Monday, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) said the investments are helping to unlock Nigeria’s gas potential by expanding infrastructure for transportation, industrial use and households.
The authority stated that while much of Nigeria’s gas potential remained untapped two years ago, investments through the MDGIF are now translating the country’s gas resources into infrastructure capable of supporting increased domestic utilisation.
It said the portfolio has an approved estimated Final Investment Decision (FID) value of ₦671 billion, with the projects positioned to contribute about 25.2 per cent of the national domestic gas supply baseline.
The NMDPRA added that a US$500 million financing framework with Afreximbank has been advanced, with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and InfraCredit also engaged to support financing for the projects.
The infrastructure portfolio comprises 160 CNG daughter stations, 20 CNG/LCNG mother stations, 13 depots and RLNG facilities, and 12 gas processing plants, reflecting the government’s push to develop an integrated gas value chain.
Of the nine CNG stations already operational, Ibile Oil & Gas operates four in Lagos, FEMADEC operates three in Owerri, Abuja and Ile-Ife, while Portland Gas operates one in Lagos and Rolling Energy operates one in Abuja.
The NMDPRA disclosed that about 50 additional projects are expected to reach the pre-commissioning stage before the end of 2026, indicating continued expansion of the country’s gas infrastructure and efforts to increase access to cleaner and more affordable gas-based energy.
