African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has sparked reactions after describing Nigerians who intend to vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election as thieves and madmen.
Amaechi made the remarks in a viral video while addressing a gathering, where he criticised those campaigning for Tinubu’s re-election and challenged voters in Edo State to reject the president at the polls.
“They are going about, vote Tinubu, vote Tinubu. Only thieves can vote for Tinubu,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor added that a social media post had suggested that the 2027 election would reveal the number of mad people in Nigeria.
“In fact, I read in one of these social media, the social media said it is in 2027 that we’ll know how many madmen we have in Nigeria.
“Because it’s only a madman that can vote for Tinubu. If Edo people vote for Tinubu, that means Edo people are mad. If you’re not mad, then Tinubu should not win here. You agree? Let me sit down and hear from you,” Amaechi said.
His comments have generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users criticising the president’s administration, while others expressed dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s political leadership.
Nigerians react to Amaechi’s remarks
Reacting to the video, Bianca David complained about the level of hardship in the country, saying she no longer wanted Tinubu to remain president.
“The Nigeria with the right leader but I don’t want tinibu again the suffering is too much,” she wrote.
Pecu called on opposition politicians to unite behind former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, arguing that his leadership could improve the country.
“All of you should come together to install Mr Peter Obi, we will all enjoy the country, instead of giving the vote to the person that doesn’t have our interest at heart,” Pecu commented.
Tomtom, however, criticised the leading political figures, describing Tinubu’s emergence in 2023 as a tragedy and expressing reservations about the alternatives.
“Tinubu is a tragedy that befall Nigeria in 2023, Atiku is a disaster, who has nothing meaningful to contribute, Peter obi on the other hand is an attention seeker, who finds it difficult to articulate his vision and also bias. We need public intellectuals who can solve problems,” the user wrote.
Another commenter, Blessed_OC, also criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC), linking the party to the country’s economic difficulties.
“All of know say Everybody wey Dey APC don mad and nah why the renewed hope Dey come with bread this period,” Blessed_OC wrote.
Akachukwu_ng, meanwhile, expressed concern about Edo State’s political direction under Governor Monday Okpebholo, arguing that the state’s image had suffered since he assumed office.
“Seriously na mockery to Edo people, ever since Okpebholo became governor every 1 the see Edo less. Edo is not Lagos that’s what we know asin Edo state is like a country on there own but now Okpebholo have bring everything down by his character,” the commenter stated.
