Traffic congestion is expected to worsen along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as the Federal Ministry of Works begins repairs on the damaged expansion joints of Kara Bridge, with commuters travelling between Lagos and Ogun states likely to face longer travel times.
The rehabilitation, which will commence on September 8, could also increase transportation and logistics costs for businesses and consumers, particularly as motorists are expected to spend more time on the corridor during the repairs.
The Federal Ministry of Works said the repair will cover about 100 metres of the bridge and is expected to last two weeks.
As there is no alternative route across the bridge, the work will be carried out in phases, with one lane of the affected section closed at a time while motorists use the remaining lane under a traffic management arrangement.
Against this backdrop, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Olawaseun Osiyemi, in a statement issued on Monday, urged motorists using the corridor to plan their journeys ahead of the commencement of the repairs.
Osiyemi also advised motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and avoid the corridor where possible if their journeys are not essential during the rehabilitation period.
“In line with the Federal Ministry of Works announcement of scheduled repair works for the damaged expansion joints on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway section of the Kara Bridge, which commences tomorrow, 8th September, 2026, the Lagos State Government advises motorists traversing the corridor to plan their journeys ahead,” he stated.
“To minimise its impact on traffic, one half of the affected section will be closed at a time, while motorists share the other open half interchangeably.
The commissioner also appealed to motorists to exercise patience and cooperate with traffic management officials to ensure the rehabilitation is completed within the scheduled two-week period.
