The National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) says it will confer fellowships and other academic qualifications on successful candidates at its 2026 convocation.
Prof. Anthony Ikefuna, President of the College, disclosed this at a press conference ahead of the convocation scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 17, at the College premises.
Ikefuna said the ceremony would celebrate another year of successful postgraduate medical training and recognise the contributions of trainers and other stakeholders to medical education.
He said the event would also honour the resilience of resident doctors and recognise the importance of medical training processes in Nigeria.
According to him, the College’s curricula align postgraduate medical training with local and national developmental challenges.
He said the programmes were designed to equip graduates to address the socioeconomic and epidemiological realities confronting medical practice.
Ikefuna said the College, established in 1979, was a Federal Government-backed tertiary institution at the apex of postgraduate medical and dental education in Nigeria.
He said it trains, assesses and certifies medical and dental doctors as specialists and consultants across various branches of medicine and dentistry.
According to him, the College provides a structured framework for resident doctors through guided curricula, faculty supervision, research monitoring and regular accreditation of training centres.
He said resident doctors faced the dual pressure of undergoing full-time specialist training while providing frontline healthcare services in the country.
Ikefuna listed the core functions of the College to include organising postgraduate academic and professional training programmes and developing curricula across medical and dental specialties.
Other functions, he said, included conducting postgraduate examinations, accrediting hospitals for residency training and running continuing professional development programmes.
He added that the College also maintained quality assurance in its examinations and training processes to meet global standards.
Ikefuna said the College currently had 17 faculties, covering areas including Anaesthesia, Dental Surgery, Family Medicine, Family Dentistry, Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine.
Others are Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Psychiatry, Public Health and Community Medicine.
He said the Faculty of Radiation and Clinical Oncology was the newest faculty, focusing on the use of ionising radiation and medications in eliminating cancer cells while sparing healthy tissues.
The president said each faculty operated through its respective Faculty Board, comprising departments that housed subspecialty programmes.
Ikefuna said the convocation would feature the conferment of Doctor of Medicine degrees and Fellowships of the College on successful candidates in various specialties.
He said some graduates would also receive post-Fellowship Diplomas in their respective specialties.
According to him, four Senior Fellows who have distinguished themselves through landmark contributions to medical practice, education, administration and College development will receive the Distinguished Fellowship of the College.
He said the convocation would also initiate the process of connecting graduates and Fellows with the College’s wider alumni body.
Ikefuna added that the event was expected to motivate resident doctors to accomplish their academic targets.
He said the ceremony would strengthen the College’s resolve to discharge its mandate in postgraduate medical education.
The president invited members of the public and stakeholders to the convocation, describing it as a gathering of experts to celebrate academic and professional excellence.
