The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested seven drug peddlers and recovered 5,916 assorted illicit drugs as part of an intensified crackdown on drug trafficking and abuse across the state.
The suspects were identified as Yahaya Ibrahim, 35; Adamu Ya’u, 33; Musa Musa, also known as Alili Boss, 22; Sani Kabiru, 35; Hashimu Haladu, 40; Mustapha Kabiru, 22; and Sani Harisu, 25.
The arrests followed intelligence-driven raids during which officers targeted suspected dealers and locations believed to be used for the distribution of illicit substances.
It was gathered on Thursday that the raids were conducted yesterday across several police divisions, including Kazaure, Gumel, Miga, Dutse, Sundimina, Taura, Babura, Ringim, Sara and Aujara.
A statement released by the Jigawa police command disclosed that the seizures were part of efforts to disrupt the supply chains sustaining illicit drug activities in the state.
The recovered substances included Exol, Tramadol, D5, Diazepam, Taramol, Rubber Solution, Pregabalin, cannabis and other assorted drugs, including five blocks of cannabis-related substances.
According to the police, upon their arrest, the suspects underwent preliminary investigation before being taken before the appropriate courts for prosecution in line with the law.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Tijjani Murtala commended the officers involved in the operations for their courage, diligence and commitment to tackling drug-related crimes.
Murtala said the command would sustain intelligence-led policing, proactive raids and cooperation with other security agencies to dismantle networks involved in the production and distribution of illicit drugs.
He also warned drug dealers against continuing their activities, while urging parents, community and religious leaders, youths and other residents to provide credible information that could assist the police in identifying suspected criminals and drug distribution networks.
The command said the latest operation formed part of its broader effort to strengthen public safety and curb activities capable of threatening security across Jigawa State.
