“One hit movie doesn’t guarantee success” — Tierny Olalere reveals reality of surviving in Nollywood

Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Tierny Olalere, has opened up about the challenges of building a lasting career in the Nigerian film industry, saying a successful movie does not automatically guarantee long-term success.

Olalere made the remarks in an interview with Saturday Beats, where she reflected on lessons she had learnt from working in Nollywood.

The actress said a breakthrough role could bring an actor significant attention but warned that the visibility could quickly disappear without consistent effort and proper career planning.

Olalere said, “I had to learn the hard way that relying solely on your instincts isn’t enough, and having a moment of fame from a hit movie doesn’t mean you have ‘blown’ or permanently made it.”

She added, “A viral project or breakthrough role gives you momentary visibility, not long-term stability. If you don’t build a sustainable structure, stay disciplined and continuously push for the next milestone, that hype fades very quickly.”

According to the filmmaker, actors need to keep developing themselves rather than relying on previous achievements.

“You cannot relax on past applause. Survival in this industry requires constantly reinventing yourself and treating your brand like a business,” she said.

Tierny Olalere speaks on talent and networking

Olalere also argued that talent alone is no longer enough to guarantee success in Nollywood.

“Talent is definitely not enough anymore. Talent is simply your entry ticket; it gets you noticed, but relationships and strategic networking dictate how far you actually go,” she said.

She further explained that relationships with directors, producers, casting agents and other industry professionals could create opportunities before auditions were publicly announced.

The actress also said she had never compromised her core values for career advancement, stressing that success achieved at the expense of integrity would not be worthwhile.
