The Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned a reported altercation involving a woman and a female student inside a university hostel, saying the matter has been addressed.
The incident came to public attention after a video showing a woman confronting and allegedly assaulting the student circulated widely on social media on Friday.
In the footage, the woman could be seen grabbing, pushing and repeatedly striking the student during the confrontation inside a hostel room.
The circumstances that led to the altercation, however, could not be independently established at the time of filing this report.
The identities of the woman and student involved were also not disclosed, while it remained unclear what triggered the confrontation.
The video showed another person attempting to intervene as the confrontation continued, with the student heard pleading with the woman to stop.
A post on X by a user identified as #AdegbolaJohn3 alleged that the woman had gone to the university hostel with her daughter and attacked her daughter’s roommate.
The post tagged Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the LASU Vice-Chancellor and the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, urging them to intervene.
The social media post attracted significant attention, reportedly recording about 38,000 views as of Friday, while users debated the circumstances surrounding the incident and raised concerns about student safety and discipline within university accommodation.
However, the allegations contained in the post could not be independently verified.
Responding to enquiries about the video, LASU confirmed that the matter had been addressed by the university but strongly condemned what was shown in the footage.
“The matter has been addressed by the University. However, we condemn this in the strongest terms,” the institution said.
The university did not disclose details of its findings or explain what measures were taken following the incident.
It also remained unclear whether the woman or any of the students involved would face disciplinary or other consequences.
The development has nevertheless renewed attention on the need for appropriate conduct and effective mechanisms for resolving disputes within university accommodation, particularly where students are involved.
