Éric Chelle has praised Stanley Nwabali for producing an important moment in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The Super Eagles had to come from behind to secure the three points in Uyo after Madagascar opened the scoring.
George Ilenikhena restored parity before fellow debutant Moses Usor completed Nigeria’s comeback with the winning goal.
However, Chelle’s side were forced to defend their advantage in the second half, with Nwabali making a crucial save to deny Madagascar an opportunity to level the contest.
Chelle pleased with goalkeeper’s display
Speaking after the match, Chelle highlighted Nwabali’s intervention as evidence of the goalkeeper’s importance to the team.
“Nwabali did well because they had a chance to score a goal, but Nwabali at this moment practically was very good,” Chelle said.
The save came during a period when Madagascar were pushing for an equaliser, with Nigeria unable to convert several opportunities that could have given them greater breathing room.
Nwabali’s contribution ultimately helped the Super Eagles see out the victory and begin their qualification campaign with three points.
Nwabali eyes another start
The goalkeeper will now be hoping his performance is enough to keep him in Chelle’s starting XI for Nigeria’s next Group L fixture.
The Super Eagles travel to face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, with Chelle’s team looking to follow up their opening victory with another positive result.
Guinea-Bissau also began their campaign with a win, setting up an early meeting between the two sides seeking to establish themselves in the group.
