Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will resign from office if President Bola Tinubu fails to win the 2027 presidential election in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday while speaking with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja. His comments were contained in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.
The minister said his continued role in the Federal Executive Council would be tied to his ability to secure the electoral support he has pledged to deliver for Tinubu in the FCT and his home state, Rivers.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said.
He added that if Tinubu loses both the FCT and Rivers State in the presidential election, he would announce his resignation on January 17, 2027, the day after the scheduled election date mentioned in his remarks.
Wike has repeatedly identified the FCT and Rivers as the two areas where he intends to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election. In recent remarks, he has also said his focus is on delivering the two territories rather than seeking a formal position in Tinubu’s presidential campaign structure.
At the Abuja meeting, Wike said a multi-party coalition was being developed in the FCT to support candidates across different elective positions while backing Tinubu at the presidential level.
He also expressed support for former FCT senator Philip Aduda in the Senate race and said two former Area Council chairmen were among the House of Representatives candidates being backed by the coalition.
“For the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Wike said, while outlining the coalition’s political direction in the FCT.
The minister maintained that his political responsibility required measurable electoral results.
“If I cannot deliver FCT as Minister, then I am not qualified to hold this office,” he said.

Wike remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while serving as a minister in Tinubu’s administration. He has nevertheless continued to publicly support Tinubu’s bid for another term and has promoted a cross-party political arrangement around the 2027 election.
His latest declaration adds a personal consequence to his stated political objective of securing Tinubu’s support in Rivers and the FCT ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
