The United States military has commenced a new training programme for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, as both nations deepen their security cooperation.
The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) disclosed this in a report published on Monday, August 24, 2026, stating that the exercises are being held at Operating Location Bauchi as part of a broader security partnership between Nigeria and the US.
According to AFRICOM, the training is designed to enhance the capacity of Nigerian personnel to respond effectively to combat situations, manage security threats, and operate modern military equipment—including unmanned aircraft systems increasingly deployed for surveillance, intelligence gathering, and other tactical operations.
The curriculum covers a range of critical military disciplines, including Combat Lifesaver and Tactical Combat Casualty Care, weapons familiarisation, camouflage, water treatment and testing, explosive ordnance disposal, small-unit tactics, and unmanned aircraft system training.
The medical modules are intended to equip personnel with the skills to administer immediate care to injured colleagues in combat, while weapons and small-unit tactics sessions focus on improving operational readiness. Explosive ordnance disposal training, meanwhile, is designed to strengthen the ability of personnel to safely identify and neutralise explosive threats.
AFRICOM emphasised that the initiative serves a dual purpose: bolstering the operational capacity of Nigeria’s security forces while fostering stronger working relationships between American and Nigerian service members.
“The US and Nigerian forces are conducting a series of training events at Operating Location Bauchi, Nigeria, aimed at sharing military expertise, strengthening partner capacity, and building relationships between service members from both nations,” AFRICOM stated.
The latest round of training reflects Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to reinforce its armed forces in response to diverse security challenges across the country. It also affords Nigerian personnel valuable exposure to modern military technology and battlefield response techniques.
AFRICOM described the programme as a testament to the enduring defence partnership between the United States and Nigeria, underscoring their shared commitment to security cooperation in the region.
