Former Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, has been sentenced to death by a Syrian court for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the country’s 14-year conflict.
Assad was sentenced in absentia alongside his younger brother, Maher al-Assad, on Tuesday, while their maternal cousin, Atef Najib, was also handed the death penalty over his role in the deadly crackdown on protesters in Daraa in 2011.
