The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been scheduled to face Cameroon in the quarter-final of the 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations, WAFCON, in a chance to secure qualification for next year’s FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria and Cameroon made the pairings after the former finished as second in Group C, with an already scheduled meet-up with the winners of Group D, Cameroon, who already finished as pace setters in their group with a game to spare.
The Nigerian female side started with a wobbling and unexpected 3-2 defeat to minnows and AWCON first-timers, Malawi, but braced up to a 1-0 win over a much stronger Zambia side before confirming their knock-out place with a 6-2 belabour over a feeble Egypt side.
Cameroon, themselves, are unbeaten in the competition after recording a 2-1 victory over Mali, as well as a loan goal win over another fellow west African side, Ghana, and would complete their group stage involvement against already eliminated Cape Verde, who are lowly placed in the group.
The Super Falcons and Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon, as the side is fondly called, have met a total of 14 times since their first face-off in 2010. The Green and White country have prevailed in eight of those games, Cameroon winning four while two have ended in even terms.
The Justice Madugu led side also have a better goal difference, scoring 17 to their opponent’s eight. In the most recent three matches involving the duo side, Nigeria mustered a 3-1 win on March 3 in an International Friendly, and also registered a solitary goal victory in an Olympic Qualifier on February 26, 2024, after already playing out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the encounter three days earlier.
The Super Falcons have proved insurmountable to Cameroon in the last seven matches as the latter only recorded one win, in reverse to Nigeria’s four.
Both sides are to face-off on Sunday, August 9, 9pm Nigerian time.
