Lecturers at the Plateau State University, PLASU, have begun an indefinite strike over the management’s failure to meet up with their welfare demands for the discharge of their duties.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in conjunction with PLASU announced the industrial action after an expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management, disclosing that despite the warning, the demands remained unsolved, thus, leading to the strike.
In a circular signed by the Chairperson, Vincent Choji, and released on Wednesday, the union stated that following a held congress meeting with the lecturers on the next steps over the neglect of the demands which include Contributory Pension Scheme, full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement and payment of arrears from January 1, 2025.
The statement also cited the non-existence of a safe and secure staff quarters, the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence and also cessation of what it describes as an intimidation of union leaders, also the demanded payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25/35 wage award.
”Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed,” the statement reads in part.
The ASUU/PLASU enjoined all its members in the institution to key into the directive until further notice till their requests are granted.
