THE Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa, George Turnah has urged Gov. Douye Diri to give priority attention to the welfare of Bayelsa people.
Turnah who made the call in an interview with newsmen in Yenagoa on Thursday said that governance was meaningless if it failed to promote the wellbeing of the people.
He said that the governor had become ‘seriously enmeshed in politics’ while government had failed to promote the welfare of the people.
“As a party, we urge the governor to concentrate on tackling economic hardship, unemployment and other pressing challenges facing Bayelsa people,” he said.
The PDP chairman described Diri’s recent comment that the opposition could not win the 2027 governorship election in the state as ‘unfair and unnecessary’
Turnah said that the electorate, and not political rhetoric, would decide the outcome of future elections in Bayelsa.
The PDP official urged the Diri-led government to implement policies that would address poverty, and directly improve the living conditions of the people.
“We urge the government to clear outstanding pension and gratuity arrears, it should also restore bursary payments to students.
“We urge the government to implement subsidised healthcare services, and evolve measures to reduce transportation costs,” he said.
According to him, the challenge before Bayelsa is not the absence of resources but failure to prioritise programmes and policies.
Turnah said that PDP would continue to offer practical alternatives for economic recovery and inclusive development in the state. (NAN)
