Chidera Ejuke scored the match-inner for Sevilla in their opening LaLiga fixture against Athletic Club
Super Eagles winger Chidera Ejuke has expressed his delight after opening his goalscoring account for the new season during Sevilla’s impressive 3-1 victory over Athletic Club at San Mamés on Saturday.
The Nigerian came off the bench to score Sevilla’s second goal, helping Luis García Plaza’s side maintain their perfect start to the LaLiga campaign.
Ejuke makes instant impact after difficult pre-season
Ejuke’s contribution was particularly significant given the uncertainty surrounding his future during pre-season. The winger was left out of Sevilla’s training camp in the Netherlands as the club worked on his situation and explored the possibility of a departure.
He trained separately from the first-team squad for a period before returning to group training ahead of the new campaign. His recent performances have now given him an opportunity to force his way into García Plaza’s plans.
After helping Sevilla secure a second consecutive league victory, Ejuke focused on the collective effort rather than his individual achievement, telling Sevilla’s official merbsite, “We’re happy with the game. Six points in two games and a good team spirit. We’re already thinking about the next one.”
The Nigerian international also stressed his willingness to make an impact whenever he is called upon, regardless of whether he starts or comes off the bench.
“I always try to be available to help the team in any way I can. In the two games we’ve played here, I’ve been able to help the team, and I’m very happy about that,” he added.
‘I wanted to play my game’ – Sevilla hero Ejuke
Ejuke revealed that maintaining his concentration and giving everything for the team were his priorities after being introduced against Athletic Club. “I wanted to play my game, stay focused, and give it my all,” he said.
That approach paid off as Ejuke found the net during a dominant Sevilla display at San Mamés. Oso opened the scoring before the Nigerian doubled the visitors’ advantage, while Isaac Romero added a third.
Athletic Club managed a consolation through Aitor Paredes, but Sevilla held on comfortably to claim another three points.
For Ejuke, the goal could prove important as he attempts to rebuild his position within the squad after an unsettled summer. With Sevilla already sitting on six points from their opening two matches, the Super Eagles winger will hope his latest cameo earns him more opportunities as the season progresses.
