The National Sports Commission, NSC, has imposed a 24-hour notice on the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to vacate their respective roles at the Glass House over accusations of maladministration, misjudgement when handling matters in the football association.
The NSC, disclosed gave the ruling citing cases of misappropriation of funds as well as series of concerns over the administration of football in the west African country which include the mens and womens national team in the 2025 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, and the 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations, WAFCON, and ultimately, the World Cup qualification ticket losses for both sides as well as the male age-grade teams, the under-17 side, more woefully failing to qualify for the African Cup which was a pathway for World Cup eligibility.
Nigeria’s women’s team, who entered the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations as defending champions, suffered a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon. The result ended their hopes of retaining the continental title.
The Falcons subsequently faced South Africa in a World Cup qualification play-off and lost 2-1, meaning Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition began in 1991.The latest setback followed the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria finished second in their qualifying group behind South Africa and subsequently reached the African play-off final, where they lost to DR Congo on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
The failure means the Super Eagles will miss the World Cup for a second consecutive edition, having also failed to make the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
However, the reported 24-hour ultimatum from the Federal Government has not been independently confirmed through an official statement from the government or the NFF.
