…seeks government intervention on students’ welfare
THE secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has charged the National Union of Benue State Students (NUBESS) to support the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s-led administration and to promote unity and peace among students.
Senator Akume gave the charge today, August 6, in Abuja when he received on a courtesy visit the executive members of National Union of Benue State Students (NUBESS) led by their Patron and the executive secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Pius Akutah. He reaffirmed the commitment of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to youth development, job creation, education, and security.
Senator Akume described the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and other education-focused initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as significant relief measures that have enabled thousands of students to pursue their education despite financial challenges.
He stated that the Federal Government is committed to empowering young Nigerians through education and other developmental programmes, stressing that President Tinubu’s administration would continue to prioritize policies that would improve students’ welfare and expand educational opportunities.
SGF assured the students that their concerns have been duly noted and pledged the continued support of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to initiatives that will advance the welfare of Benue youths. He urged the students to remain law-abiding, focus on their studies, and be good ambassadors of Benue State wherever they are.
The visit was to formally endorse President Tinubu’s second-term bid, identify with the SGF and to present some of the pressing challenges confronting Benue students across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
During the visit, the National President of NUBESS, Favour Wandoo Titus, commended Senator Akume for his exemplary leadership and contributions to national development. She described the SGF as a proud son of Benue whose elevation has continued to bring pride and renewed hope to the people of the state.
The NUBESS President presented a memorandum outlining key challenges facing Benue students to include: delay in payment of bursary and scholarships, insecurity affecting students from Benue, high cost of tuition and accommodation.
She appealed to the Office of the SGF to use its good offices to facilitate prompt intervention from relevant government agencies and to ensure that Benue students are carried along in federal government programmes and policies.
In his remarks, the Patron of NUBESS and Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Dr. Pius Akutah, the Patron of NUBESS commended Senator Akume for his longstanding commitment to education, particularly through scholarship schemes and intervention programmes that have benefited many students.
The Student’s Union Body presented Senator Akume with an Award of Recognition in appreciation of his exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions to the advancement of education, Benue State, and Nigeria as a whole.
