Former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya has won the Republican nomination for Minnesota’s open Senate seat in the August 11 primary.
Tafoya, a four-time Emmy Award winner and longtime sports journalist, secured about 51% of the vote with roughly one-fifth of ballots counted, according to the New York Post. Former Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze finished second with 22%, while former professional basketball player Royce White received 9%.
The Republican primary victory puts Tafoya on track for a high-profile general election campaign in November as she seeks to turn a Democratic-held Senate seat red.
Who is Michele Tafoya?
Michele Tafoya is a veteran American sports broadcaster who became one of the most recognizable female reporters on NFL sidelines.
She began her broadcasting career in Minnesota, working at Minneapolis radio station KFAN and covering the Minnesota Vikings and the University of Minnesota. She joined CBS in 1994 before moving into national sports television.
