THE Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF) has urged stakeholders to institutionalise mentorship to strengthen leadership, human capital and sustainable national development.
The Foundation made the call in a communique issued after its July 2026 Monthly Virtual Mentorship Programme held via Zoom.
The communique was signed by the Foundation’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abubakar Gambo Umar.
The programme was themed, “Mentor One, Build Many: Creating Lasting Community Impact through Personal Commitment.”
The session featured Prof. Plangsat Bitrus Dayil, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Jos, as guest mentor.
It said participants examined mentorship as a strategic investment for developing individuals, institutions and communities through deliberate personal commitment.
The communique described mentorship as an effective but underutilised tool for leadership development, succession planning and community transformation.
It noted that sustainable societal progress depended on intentional investment in people through guidance, knowledge transfer and character development.
The Foundation said effective mentorship also promoted ethical values, confidence, critical thinking, emotional support and responsible citizenship.
It added that organisations cultivating mentoring relationships were better positioned to develop future leaders and sustain institutional continuity.
The communique identified declining mentorship culture and weak succession planning among challenges confronting institutions and communities.
It also cited inadequate platforms for intergenerational knowledge transfer and limited structured mentorship opportunities for young people.
The Foundation called on government to promote structured mentorship through youth development and human capital policies.
It urged educational institutions to integrate mentorship into student development programmes alongside academic learning.
The communique encouraged public and private organisations to institutionalise mentorship for staff development, succession planning and organisational sustainability.
It also urged professionals, entrepreneurs, retirees and community leaders to mentor younger generations using their knowledge, experience and networks.
The Foundation encouraged families to strengthen mentorship by promoting discipline, positive values and responsible citizenship among children.
It advised young people to seek credible mentors while embracing continuous learning, personal growth and community service.
The communique urged every beneficiary of mentorship to mentor others, sustaining knowledge transfer and long term community development.
The Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to advancing mentorship as a pillar of leadership development, peace building and sustainable national development. (NAN)
