…major Infrastructure Upgrade Set to Boost Water Production, Improve Operational Efficiency and Expand Access to Safe, Potable Water Across Lagos State
IN a significant demonstration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s unwavering commitment to transforming water infrastructure and improving the quality of life of Lagos residents, the Lagos State Government (LASG), through, Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) has commenced the strategic installation of new pumps at the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations.
The landmark intervention, approved and funded by the Lagos State Government under the visionary leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu, represents another major milestone in the administration’s sustained investment in critical infrastructure aimed at guaranteeing reliable, safe and sustainable water supply for millions of Lagosians. The initiative further underscores the Governor’s determination to build a resilient water sector capable of meeting the demands of Africa’s fastest-growing megacity.
The strategic installation forms part of the “Rehabilitation of Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Station – Lots 1, 2 & 3,” a flagship infrastructure renewal project designed to modernise key water production facilities, improve operational efficiency, increase water production capacity and expand access to safe, potable water across Lagos State.
The ongoing rehabilitation is a major component of the Corporation’s comprehensive eight-month programme for the rehabilitation of the Iju and Adiyan Water Treatment Plants, funded entirely by the Lagos State Government and scheduled to run from February 2026 to October 2026.
At the project’s kick-off meeting held earlier this year at the Corporation’s Headquarters in Ijora, the Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, described the rehabilitation as a transformational initiative that aligns with the Corporation’s Strategic Business Plan and the Lagos State Government’s vision of delivering world-class public water services.
According to Engr. Tijani, the rehabilitation focuses principally on the replacement and upgrade of critical pumping systems and associated infrastructure to restore optimal operational efficiency and strengthen the Corporation’s water production capacity.
He noted that the intervention reflects Governor Sanwo-Olu’s steadfast commitment to revitalising Lagos’ water infrastructure and ensuring that residents enjoy improved access to reliable and sustainable public water supply.
The Managing Director stressed that the project would be executed in accordance with the highest engineering and quality standards, urging all contractors and stakeholders to remain committed to timely delivery.
“This project must not be business as usual. We want all hands on deck to ensure timely and successful delivery. Let this dream become a reality,” Engr. Tijani stated.
Upon completion, the rehabilitation project is expected to significantly improve the operational performance of the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations, increase water production, strengthen service reliability, reduce operational downtime and ultimately enhance access to safe, potable water for millions of residents across Lagos State.
The Lagos Water Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development agenda of the Lagos State Government by delivering sustainable, efficient and customer-focused water services while continuously investing in critical infrastructure that will secure the future of public water supply in Lagos.
