Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sealed some markets and plazas in the Ayobo-Ipaja area over environmental violations as it intensifies efforts to clear waste backlogs and curb indiscriminate dumping.
The enforcement was carried out following repeated environmental infractions and failure by the affected facilities to comply with the Authority’s directives on proper waste management and environmental sanitation.
The operation, conducted on Sunday by LAWMA’s Project WISE team covering the Ikeja West District, targeted defaulting facilities across the Ayobo-Ipaja axis.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the affected facilities included Rock of Age Plaza, Ajerogun 1 Market, Ayobo Market and Oba Plaza.
Gbadegesin said the enforcement complemented the Authority’s ongoing waste evacuation and environmental sanitation operations across the Ayobo-Ipaja axis.
He said LAWMA’s teams had cleared accumulated waste from several locations, including Oluwaga Bus Stop by Sawmill, the Ayobo Road median by Rainoil, Atan Nla by TCN, Ayobo Police Post and Megida Bus Stop.
The LAWMA boss said the Authority would continue to combine waste evacuation with monitoring and enforcement to prevent cleared locations from becoming waste black spots again.
He stressed that achieving lasting environmental improvement required the cooperation of residents, traders, businesses and other waste generators, particularly in complying with approved waste disposal arrangements.
Gbadegesin reiterated that LAWMA would take necessary enforcement action against individuals, markets, plazas and other facilities that violate environmental regulations or contribute to indiscriminate waste dumping.
He urged residents and businesses in the area to patronise their assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, dispose of waste through approved channels and avoid activities that could undermine efforts to maintain a clean environment.
