The Kano State Government has facilitated a re-marrying wedding ceremony for a man identified as Haruna Bashir after gunmen killed his initial wife and six children in a devastating attack.
The government paid the sum of N200,000 as Bashir’s bride price, to make him one of the 1,500 couples who benefited from the state government’s mass wedding programme, receiving support to begin a new chapter of his life after the family tragedy.
He wedding to Nabila Yunusa, his new wife, was held on Friday at the central Juma’at the Emir’s Palace, as part of the state-wide mass wedding exercise, where the state government also extended other forms of assistance to Bashir following the loss of his entire immediate family.
Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Aminu Daurawa, said the government had taken several steps to help the widower recover from the tragedy and rebuild his life.
Daurawa disclosed that Bashir was sponsored to perform Umrah and was also supported to participate in the Hajj pilgrimage, adding that the government had allocated a house to Bashir at Amana City as part of measures aimed at reducing the burden created by the loss of his family.
Bashir was said to have lost his wife, Fatima Abubakar, and their six children on January 17, 2026, after gunmen attacked their home at the Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters in Kano.
During the Friday wedding, Governor Abba Yusuf served as the Wali for the grooms, while the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented the brides during the ceremony.
The mass wedding was conducted simultaneously across Kano’s 44 local government areas, targeting widows and other qualified beneficiaries.
Each bride received N200,000 as dowry, while additional financial assistance was provided to enable beneficiaries to establish small businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Daurawa urged the couples to protect the institution of marriage by promoting peace, understanding and responsible family life.
He said stable marriages would contribute to stronger communities and broader development across the state.
The Chief Imam of Kano State, Sani Zahraddeen, who conducted the marriage solemnisation, urged the couples to practise kindness, love and fairness in their homes.
Zahraddeen particularly reminded husbands with multiple wives that Islamic teachings require them to ensure fairness in their treatment of their spouses.
Another beneficiary, Musbahu Abdullahi, praised the state government for the initiative and promised to treat his wife with care and responsibility.
Prayers were also offered for peace, stability and unity in Kano State and Nigeria.
The latest mass wedding programme is the second organised by the Abba Yusuf administration, with the government allocating about N1.5 billion for the exercise.
