Herder kills farmer during clash n Kaduna

A farmer identified as Reuben Akawu has been killed by a 20-year-old herder, Gambo Ibrahim, following a clash between herders and farmers at Rafin Dadi, Kaninkon, in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Akawu was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the General Hospital, Kafanchan, where he was rushed after sustaining severe injuries from an attack with cutlasses and sticks.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the military said troops of Sector 7, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), were deployed to the community after receiving a distress call over the clash.

According to a military source, the troops found Akawu critically injured when they arrived at the scene and immediately evacuated him to the General Hospital, Kafanchan.

The source said Ibrahim was subsequently arrested in connection with the attack, while other suspects fled the area.

Meanwhile, members of the deceased’s family and some Fulani residents contributed N197,000 to support Akawu’s family with burial expenses.

The source said military operatives were working with local security personnel to locate the fleeing suspects, who are expected to face investigation and possible prosecution if apprehended.

The source also said soldiers had intensified monitoring of the area to prevent further violence, while residents were urged to remain calm and avoid retaliatory attacks that could worsen tensions between the communities.
