A female motorist has lost her life in a tragic lone road accident along the Mongoro area, inward Ile-Zik, in Lagos, after her vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a roadside building.
As gathered, the driver lost control of the vehicle before it left the carriageway and rammed violently into a building. The impact of the collision was described as severe, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged and claiming the driver’s life on the spot.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the deceased, who was the sole occupant of a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB, died instantly from injuries sustained in the crash.
LASTMA officials on routine patrol were among the first emergency responders to arrive at the scene. They immediately cordoned off the affected section of the road with safety cones and commenced traffic control to prevent gridlock and secondary crashes while evacuation operations were underway.
The authority said the swift intervention of its officers helped minimise disruption to traffic and restored the free flow of vehicles within a short period despite the temporary obstruction caused by the accident.
Security operatives from the Afonka Police Post under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters also responded promptly, providing security throughout the rescue and evacuation exercise until the scene was cleared.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the fatal crash as a painful reminder of the dangers associated with excessive speed and reckless driving.
He stressed that speed limits were established to save lives and urged motorists to exercise patience, caution and discipline on the roads.
“Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life. Excessive speed remains one of the foremost causes of fatal road traffic crashes and motorists must, at all times, exercise the highest degree of caution, restraint and responsibility while behind the wheel,” Bakare-Oki said.
The LASTMA boss also advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles are mechanically fit before embarking on any trip, warning that any sign of mechanical defect should be addressed immediately to prevent avoidable tragedies.
He urged drivers to carry out regular maintenance checks and avoid operating vehicles with suspected faults that could compromise safety on the road.
The agency extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, praying for the repose of her soul and for God to grant her loved ones the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
