Families of 53 victims of the Sokoto boat mishap have laid their loved ones to rest as communities affected by the tragedy continue to mourn.
The victims died after a passenger boat carrying between 75 and 80 people capsized while crossing a waterway at the Gorau crossing point in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The burial took place on Friday, with the Imam of Gorau community and the local Muslim community leading the funeral prayers, which were attended by the victims’ relatives, friends and other members of the community.
The number of confirmed victims rose from an initial 48 to 53 following the recovery of additional bodies from the river.
The waterway is regularly used by residents travelling to farmlands located across the river.
Many of those on board were women and children travelling to their farms, while the village head of Nabatsami Gorau was also among the passengers.
The tragedy has left affected communities in mourning as families come to terms with the loss of their loved ones.
