GOV. Douye Diri of Bayelsa has called for justice, equity and good governance to strengthen democracy and promote sustainable development in Nigeria.
Diri made the call on Tuesday in Bauchi while speaking at the annual Democracy Dialogue organised by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in collaboration with the Bauchi State Government.
The theme of the dialogue is: “Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties and the Judiciary Save African Democracy.”
Diri lamented that Bayelsa has only eight local government areas in spite of being an oil-producing state.
He said that oil revenues were being distributed to states monthly, and stressed the need for justice and equity in the distribution of the nation’s resources.
Diri emphasised the need for strong democratic institutions and equitable distribution of the country’s resources.
He highlighted that democracy is about the people and institutions, adding that Nigeria needs to strengthen its democratic institutions to ensure that citizens benefit from its abundant mineral deposits.
The governor also expressed concern over the injustice in the exploration and distribution of Nigeria’s natural resources, particularly oil.
Diri said it was unfair for oil-producing communities to continue to suffer in spite of the enormous resources generated from their areas.
“There is no justice where oil is owned by the country and oil-producing communities do not benefit adequately from the resources.
“For Nigeria to thrive, it must practice true federalism. I don’t think that is what democracy is all about,” he said.
Diri therefore called for greater attention to local government areas, adding that LGAs had a important role to play in the development of the country.
He said that some communities had remained without access to basic infrastructure for several decades, describing the situation as unacceptable.
The governor further linked resource exploitation and poor development to insecurity being experienced in parts of the country.
“Insecurity threatens the sovereignty and stability of the country.
“So, my dear leaders, my common issue is that for democracy to thrive in Nigeria, there must be justice, fairness and good governance.” Diri said.
He underscored the imperative for Nigeria to translate its democratic ideals into practical action to achieve true democracy and improve the lives of its citizens.
Diri commended former President Goodluck Jonathan for providing an opportunity for leaders to come together to contribute toward building a better country.
He expressed confidence that collective efforts by leaders would help strengthen democracy, promote development and make the country better.
Also, Mr Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 election, urged Nigerians to eschew bad governance, injustice and political manipulation.
Obi said that Nigerians must begin to ask critical questions about the direction of the country and work collectively to reverse the negative trends affecting the nation.
According to Obi, Nigeria has the potential to become a better and more prosperous country if citizens unite and demand accountability from those entrusted with political leadership.
He lamented the increasing erosion of democratic values and the inability of political leaders to prioritise the interests and welfare of the people.
The presidential hopeful said that Nigeria must move away from a system where political power was being used to advance personal interests rather than serve the people.
Obi also expressed concern over the challenges confronting Nigeria, including insecurity, economic hardship, poverty and declining public confidence in government institutions.
He enjoined political leaders and citizens to put aside personal interests and work towards rebuilding the country.
While urging Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process, Obi called for renewed commitments to democracy, good governance, justice, accountability and national development.
