President Bola Tinubu has extended the implementation period of the 2025 budget from September 30 to December 31, 2026, following his assent to the Appropriation (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill, 2025.
The extension, the president said, gives Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) additional time to implement outstanding provisions of the budget, particularly ongoing capital projects and other critical government programmes.
The amendment was passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, before being transmitted to the President for assent.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the extension would enable government agencies to ensure that funds already appropriated are fully utilised for the benefit of Nigerians.
According to the statement, the measure is also intended to prevent disruptions to critical programmes and provide MDAs with sufficient time to complete projects that are still ongoing under the 2025 budget.
The President commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their prompt consideration and passage of the amendment, describing it as another indication of cooperation between the Executive and Legislature in the service of the country.
